Just a short mail to say Thank You very much for our very enjoyable Christmas meal on Friday. The food, service and ambiance was nothing other than fantastic, everyone thought it was superb, thank you.
You certainly have a formula for success, so well done and good luck in the future, I am sure we will return.
Have a great Christmas and a prosperous new year.
Thanks again.
Hi Paul
Just wanted to write and say how much we enjoyed our dinner at your restaurant on Saturday. It was absolutely superb. The food was delicious, the friendly welcoming staff and the lovely setting complete the overall experience. The whole evening was fantastic. Thank you so much for making my birthday even more special, I would not have wanted to spend it any other way. We will definitely be returning and only wish that you were closer to where we live, but with that kind of experience, it is well worth the drive! Good luck for 2009!!
This was our first visit to Nobles, under the current team, and we were impressed. We were warmly welcomed, given every attention and never rushed. Because what I fancied was not on the menu the chef provided a dish which was usually only available at lunch time. The menu was short `but the food was sophisticated and subtly flavoured. We each had a starter and main course, an aperitif and an acceptable bottle of Rioja. The total bill, including gratuity, was £70. Good value for money.
We dined there on Monday, and it was quite simply the best. From the welcome to the goodbye, this was an outstanding experience. The waitress could not have been more polite, helpful or efficient; truly first class and all on her own with at least seven other tables to look after. The food was extraordinarily good, even food that we wouldn't normally like, was eaten with delight. I cannot speak more highly of this place. My advice, go there and experience it for yourself.
Great restaurant - enthusiastic staff - well cooked and presented food - sadly slightly long wait between courses although this would not stop us going again.
An extremely pleasant evening. food was varied and well presented. I finished every morsel. chocolate brulee was to die for and the chef even gave me the recipe. staff were attentive and very pleasant. well done all of you at nobles in battle.
Nobles Restaurant in Battle is a great place for a special meal, and well worth a visit.
Another delicious meal at Nobles in Battle, a la carte and menu choices were excellent, imaginative and very enjoyable. We all had tasty beef main courses after lovely firsts. For dessert the pear in red wine and cinnamon was perfect and my guests both had the syllabub made with blackberries picked in the morning - as advertised: fresh and locally sourced!
Just had to send a note so say how much my friend and I enjoyed ourlunch at your restaurant today.
It was our first visit to your restaurant and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The surroundings are lovely, your staff are excellent. It was a lovely touch of 'posh' in the middle of the afternoon, it made us both feel that we were really having a treat.
We chose from the 1066 menu and had the pasta and strawberry syllabub. The pasta was superb, I was fully expecting a sauce with it (as so often is the case), but your dish was a pleasant surprise, a truly tasty dish. The strawberry syllabub, well I'm still dreaming about it, so I guess that's enough said.
Keep up the good work, your restaurant is a real treasure find. We will definitely be back (looking forward to it already).
Good luck.
We dined at Nobles on Monday evening for the first time. Overall it was a very pleasant experience: The waitress was polite & friendly, the restaurant clean & well presented and the food tasty. There weren't many choices on the evening '3 courses for £17.50 menu' so two out of three of us ordered from the general menu. We will likely go back sometime to try the lunchtime two course menu for £10.66.
My husband and I ate at Nobles last night and had a fantastic time. The food was superb, the service was excellent and we will definitely eat here again. Spotlessly clean and great decor. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Lunch at Nobles was a really enjoyable experience, with a chef who obviously cared about the food he was producing, very pleasant service and excellent value for money. Will definitely return
Nobles is one of the best restaurants in the Battle area. We had a very good dinner and the food was extremely good. The restaurant's layout is a bit disjointed with diners eating in 3 separate rooms so ambiance is an issue, but once the restaurant filled, a good buzz was present. Service is friendly and enthusiastic but a little amateur. All in all, we had a very good dinner and would definitely return..
We ate at Nobles on a Friday evening and by 1930 it was almost full. This was a third visit and as usual exceptional. An interesting menu with good quality local ingredients and just the right size portions so you can enjoy 3 courses without feeling stuffed. Well presented food cooked beautifully. The restaurant is crisp and contemporary and great for those who love best in class food. In my view this is the best restaurant in the area and I have been to most of them! Highly recommended
Just a quick line to say how much we enjoyed ourselves last night - the food was superb, the service excellent and the surroundings great. You made us feel all very comfortable, will definitely come again, shame you're not a bit closer to us (Romney Marsh).
What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday lunchtime. A short walk from Battle station through the picturesque town of Battle . This restaurant, aptly named Nobles, falls within the highstreet itself. The food was fantastic, all very fresh and no meagre portions. The service was homely and very attentive. We will definately be heading back soon to try more delights from the a la carte menu with home made chocolates or perhaps take advantage of the £10.66 two course set menu.
Nobles ( Battle ) is a great restaurant in a fabulous historic place. Although the outside and entrance don't give the impression of a high standard restaurant, the food is excellent and service very dedicated. Goats cheese and sundried tomato soufle on a bed of homegrown salad leaves and raddishes was superb. The lamb with cauliflower cheese was even better. Would definitely recommend to anyone and will return when I am next in the neighbourhood to play golf.
The only restaurant I have rated 10/10 twice in a row. Exquisite food bursting with flavour and interesting combinations. Excellent wine list including prosecco and black muscat - and all served with genuine smiles.
At Nobles in Battle we (4 for lunch) found the dishes imaginative, seasonal and of the highest standard, as well as excellent value. It was particularly good to eat in their secluded, walled terrace in the sun.
Very friendly restaurant, we were served straightaway & didn't wait long for food. Meal was piping hot made with locally sourced fresh ingredients (the chef said they had started a kitchen garden at the rear of the property). Good place to dine as couple, celebratory occasions or with girlfriends for lunch.
Although arriving very late due to traffic hold ups we were received most graciously and warmly into the calm atmosphere of impeccable table linen and sparkling glasses. The excellent service continued throughout the meal. We chose to have the lunch special offer. The food was wholesome, interesting and well presented. There was no meat dish which was a disappointment. The chef's hand made truffles served with the coffee were spectacular.
It was our first time at Nobles and we will be going back. Excellent!!
Friday evening at Nobles was excellent, plenty of other diners but not too many; excellent food sourced locally and prepared expertly; good and very reasonable wine.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Nobles, in Battle. The ambiance was relaxing and welcoming and the service was friendly and efficient. The food was superb and we think it was one of the best meals we have eaten! We would highly recommend visiting Nobles and we will be returning.
Nicely presented freshly cooked food. Good friendly service.
Our meal was simply exceptional: all the senses were thoroughly satisfied. This restaurant deserves a Michelin star. Simple, classic, recipes prepared to the highest standard from the finest ingredients. Excellent service and a good selection of wines. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Battle, the small market town in East Sussex, is (as any schoolchild used to know) the site of the Battle of Hastings, of 1066 and all that fame. We have friends who farm nearby, and on Boxing Day we all gather in the town square to watch the annual meet of the local hunt. The sight of the huntsmen in their red coats with hounds mingling with the crowds, all against the backdrop of the Battle Abbey gatehouse is a nostalgic scene of old England. A little further down the High Street at number 17, is a fine old townhouse which houses Nobles Restaurant. The dining rooms have been beautifully refurbished and we particularly admired the chairs, which had been made by a local craftsman. They are both elegant and comfortable. Four of us had booked in for dinner on Saturday night, and we arrived reasonably early so as to get our orders in ahead of the rush.
The three course dinner menu (£19 50) is concise, (five starters, eight mains and five puds) and much to my delight, celebrates both seasonality and local produce. It also shows off Chef Paul Noble’s more specialist techniques, presumably honed to perfection at such prior London establishments as the Goring and the Landmark. He is clearly a dab hand with the smoker, and his breadmaking is very good. Although there are side orders of vegetables available, they're pretty well redundant since each dish has its own integrated selection of goodies.
A starter of home smoked haddock was full of flavour and it came with a "Gruyère baby omelette" which provided a suitably supportive canvas. I kicked off with an excellent risotto made with local Wealdway ash goat's cheese, enriched with sun blushed tomatoes. The risotto itself was delicious and its texture quite perfect, but I wasn't sure about the shaved parmesan cheese on the top which I thought was having a bit of a fight with the goat. Two of us had the "three ways duck" (£2 supp) which was really sensational. The tender pink breast revealed subtle hints of more home smoking, the slow cooked leg was shredded and schmaltzy, while the Foie Gras terrine was rich and gamey. This duck dish deserves a quack factor of nine out of ten, which is the most I ever give!
There are two vegetarian dishes in the main menu, both of which looked interesting: mushroom stroganoff made from wild mushrooms and a spinach aubergine and parsnip gateau. I was really tempted, but with local wild boar and Romney Marsh lamb and beef in close competition it proved to be only a minor flirtation. The fish mixed grill (£2 supp) was a good idea, with salmon, prawn, squid and cod all mingled with braised fennel, tomatoes and olives -- very Mediterranean. My wife pronounced it very tasty but she rather hankered after some sauce. (No, not Heinz tomato ketchup)! Both the roast saddle of Romney Marsh lamb and the chargrilled fillets of Romney Marsh beef (£6.50 supp) lived up to expectations: their garnishes had been well thought out, particularly the braised endive and shallots which added an even richer dimension to the steak while the glazed fondant potatoes were copybook examples.
Now it was my turn to have a "three ways" dish. This time it was three different parts of the progeny of a wild boar that had somehow got into the pen of a local porker! Slow cooked belly of pork has become a little hackneyed lately, but this was really to die for - almost jellylike it was so tender, and the flavour was porky and best. A noisette of roast loin, normally the piece de resistance, was actually rather overshadowed by the extreme tenderness of the humble belly. The third member of the trio was a deliciously spicy sausage, home-made of course, and revealing yet another of the Chef's accomplishments.
For pudding we tried a lightly spiced crème brulée, which had a nice crunchy topping. The white chocolate cheesecake went down particularly well - yummy was the term used. Meanwhile I was tucking into an apricot bread and butter pudding, multilayered and well drenched in custard. The selection of local British cheeses was well worth the supplement of two pounds and we particularly appreciated the accompanying home made chutney.
The wine list is also concise, but well chosen; we enjoyed two bottles of a very nice rosé and then went on to a superb claret, a premier cru St Emilion from Chateau Chant-Alouette, the 2003 vintage, drinking really beautifully and offered at a bargain price of £20.60. Service was both friendly and homely – no airs and graces or attitude.
I have visited Nobles several times, since it was launched last summer and always enjoyed an excellent meal. Nobles has a superb wine list, short but varied, and the food produced by Paul Noble (Head Chef) is always of a high quality using fresh and local produce. I consider Nobles very good value for money and this, coupled with the food and the friendly staff, makes it my favourite restaurant in Battle.
